It’s always good to get outside to enjoy the sunshine and get involved in a game of cricket! The perfect lesson after a morning of SATs! Well done Y6 – working hard and enjoying your PE lessons!

On Friday 8th May, Year 6 had the opportunity to work with Yuki who comes all the way from Japan. Chelsea and Dalton were given the chance to dress in Japanese clothes. Everyone asked Yuki lots of questions about Japan. He showed them where Japan is and the city he comes from. Yuki then led a whole class lesson on the ancient art of Origami – what a wondeful experience!

Here is a written report from 6P pupil – Jack Worrell
Investigation 1
In science today we were investigating what materials were best at protecting fragile objects. We used Pringles as our fragile object, my group used Bubble wrap, Foam paper and Cardboard as our protectors. We all predicted thta the Bubble wrap was the best because it had air pockets to protect it. We filled in some boxes: what will change, the packaging, we will observe/measure,see if it smashes or breaks/see if it protects it, we will keep the same, the height dropped from, the crisps, the same ommount of packaging the same force dropped from, the sixze of the crisps, the same carpet or floor. We then wrapped our crisps protectors and then dropped them on the ground to see which one would break.
Our Results
Cardboard:didn’t break
Foam paper:did break
Bubble wrap:didn’t wrap
Investigation 2
My group wrapped an egg, which was in a bag, with brown parcel paper and put in a padded envolope. Then Mr. Preston will post it and we will get it back and see if the egg has smashed or if it is still in tact. When we get it back on Friday or Monday we will see which protector is best.
After painting our paper mache masks, we carefully cut out the eye holes before adding pipe cleaners for the snake hair effect.
Scary 6P.

Here are some photos of 6P as they carry out their investigation to separate sand, salt and water from a mixture they have made.
Can you see how filtering with the use of a funnel and filter paper helps to separate the sand from the mixture?
Evaporating will cause the water to turn to vapour leaving behind salt crystals.
How can we recover the water when it evaporates and turns to water vapour?
The children always learn most effectively when carrying out practical work in Science.
Remember to think about how we can make a fair test.
Which factors can we change?
What are our predictions?
Carry out observations and collect our results.
What do our results tell us?
Lots to think about in Science lessons – that’s what makes it such a great subject.

The children in 6P had to carefully measure and cut out art straws in their attempts to visualise and make a selection of 2D shapes.
For this task, Mr Preston gave a set of instructions, for example – “I want you to make a pentagon with 2 right angles and one pair of parallel lines”, which the children had to then construct.
Other challenges included making a pentagon with 3 sets of perpendicular lines and 1 set of parallel lines.
The children all rose to the challenge and thoroughly enjoyed their investigative work.

6P had a most enjoyable session with Ian at the Samba drumming workshop. All of the children were given the opportunity to play a selection of drums and the session culminated in a full class performance to year 4.
Well done 6P.

Here’s a selection of photos showing 6P being creative in the classroom. It’s good to know that we’ve got some very imaginative, hard working children in Year 6. You set an excellent example at South Parade Primary School!
Here’s Dalton, Eden and Sharnie. They’re just starting to make their Greek Masks.
Good to see you pupils wearing the old art shirts whilst using the glue!
Well done 6P!

Here’s a photo of Dalton, Eden and Sharnie as they start making their Greek masks. This DT project ties in so well with our History work on ‘Ancient Greece’.
Here the children are making the basic shape of their mask by covering an inflated balloon with wet, sticky newspaper pieces.
Keep going Year 6….and it’s good to see you in old art shirts!
